A permanent number, required under SOLAS regulation XI-1/3 to be marked on all passenger ships of 100 GT and over, and all cargo ships of 300 GT and over, and which remains unchanged on change of flag. It is composed of the letters "IMO" plus a seven-digit number allocated by IHS Fairplay to every sea-going merchant ship of 100 GT and over at the time of build.

By the same transmission means, with the appropriate Extension Certificate contained in their message. The Extension Certificate should be attached to the relevant certificate.

IMO Resolution A. 949(23) - Guidelines on Places of Refuge for Ships in Need of Assistance - defines it as a place where a ship in need of assistance can take action to enable it to stabilize its condition and reduce the hazards to navigation, and to protect human life and the environment.
