The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a treaty document that attempts to codify the international law of the sea. It came into force on 16November 1994. At 7 November 2012, 164 States were parties to UNCLOS.

What is the dilution method?
A process by which replacement ballast water is filled through the top of the ballast tank or hold intended for the carriage of water ballast with simultaneous discharge from the bottom at the same flow rate and maintaining a constant level in the tank or hold. At least three times the tank or hold volume must be pumped through the tank or hold.
Which ships does SOLAS chapter IX apply to?
Ships, regardless of date of build, as follows: (1) passenger ships including passenger high-speed craft; (2) oil tankers, chemical tankers, gas carriers and cargo high-speed craft of 500 GT and upwards; and (3) other cargo ships and mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs) of 500 GT and upwards. Where might a UK ship be subject to a port State control inspection?
