Before being assigned to any shipboard duties, masters, chief mates and anyone with immediate responsibility for embarking and disembarking passengers must complete MCA-approved training in (1) Passenger Safety (as specified in Paragraph 4, STCW Code A-V/3), and (2) Crisis Management and Human Behaviour (as specified in Paragraph 5, STCW Code A-V/3).

One or more "competent persons" must be appointed by the employer "in order to provide such protective and preventive services as are necessary to enable him to comply with the requirements of these Regulations" - in other words to promote shipboard health and safety.

Where any of the Regulations of SI 1996/75 is contravened, the owner, the master and any person for the time being responsible for the vessel's conduct (e. g. the OOW) will each be guilty of an offence punishable on conviction on indictment by a maximum 2 years' imprisonment and a fine; and on summary conviction, in the case of a breach of Rule 10(b)(i) (duty to proceed with traffic flow in TSS lanes) by a fine not exceeding £50, 000, and in any other case by a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum (i. e. £5, 000). (Reg. 6(1))

A designation of seven classes (PC 1, PC 2, PC 3, PC 4, PC 5, PC 6 and PC 7) assigned by IACS under Unified Requirement UR I to ships (other than icebreakers) intended to operate in polar regions. In addition to structural and machinery requirements as for ice class ships, there are propeller design requirements.
