An undertaking by the owners to maintain the vessel in good condition throughout the charter period. 

A Domestic Ship Safety Management Certificate (DSSMC). In order to simplify certification of ships of Classes III to VI(A), a combined Passenger Certificate (PC) and DSSMC is also available, with a 5-year maximum validity period. (This was promulgated in MIN 160, which has expired.)

The duty to ensure that documents, information or records are kept and not altered and to ensure that information is saved and preserved, or that equipment is left undisturbed continues until:

(1) That the certificate was issued by a flag State Administration (in accordance with STCW Regulation 1/2); 

In certain cases, particularly during the initial period of operation under the SMS, the flag State Administration may find it necessary to increase the frequency of the intermediate verification. Also, the nature of non-conformities may also provide a basis for increasing the frequency of intermediate verifications.

Liability imposed on one person for the acts of another person, even though the person made liable is not personally at fault. Examples of vicarious liability include an employer's vicarious liability for damages caused by his employees during the course of their duties. In English law a shipowner is vicariously liable for the acts of his ship's master and crew.

A certificate (separate from any other document) either as to the quality of his work or indicating whether he has fully discharged his obligations under his contract of employment. The master, or another authorised officer, must give him this, if the seaman asks for it, within 6 months from the date of his discharge from or his leaving the ship.

The standard of competence for certification of proficiency as ship security officer, set out in section A-VI/5, paragraphs 1 to 4 of the STCW Code. (STCW Reg. VI/5.1.2)

Within UK internal waters (i. e. inside baselines) and within the UK territorial sea (the seaward limit of which extends to a maximum of 12 nautical miles from the baseline).

Each completed operation must be signed for and dated by the officer(s) in charge and, if applicable, by a surveyor authorised by the competent authority in which the ship is unloading.

They can extend their common law lien for freight by adding a contractual lien for deadfreight and demurrage, e. g. "Owners shall have a lien on the cargo for freight, deadfreight and demurrage ".
