Offshore support vessels which transport limited amounts of hazardous and noxious liquid substances in bulk for the servicing and resupplying of offshore platforms, mobile offshore drilling units and other offshore installations, including those employed in the search for and recovery of hydrocarbons from the sea-bed. (The term "limited amounts" is defined in the LHNS Guidelines.)

Substances that cause deterioration of the Earth's protective ozone layer, located in the stratosphere, which shields the Earth from ultra-violet radiation. ODSs are defined in the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, 1987. ODSs that may be found on board ship are listed in the revised MARPOL Annex VI.

Any country where a port call may bring increased financial or other risks (e. g. of detention) to the shipowner, or a risk of the ship being subsequently barred from another country's ports, e. g. Israel, Persian/Arabian Gulf, Cuba, Vietnam, Kampuchea, North Korea, Lebanon, Angola, Namibia, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Ethiopia and South Africa.
