Either a claim in personam, i. e. "against the person" (which may be a corporate body or an individual), or a claim in rem, i. e. "against the matter" (which is usually a named ship). Many claimants prefer to make a claim in rem against a ship, especially where the ship's owner is difficult to identify.

Under reg. 16. 4, shipboard incineration of sewage sludge and sludge oil generated during normal operation of a ship may take place in the main or auxiliary power plant or boilers, but in those cases, must not take place inside ports, harbours and estuaries.

A copy of the completed waste notification notice must be kept on board until at least the next port of call is reached, and must be produced on demand to the MCA or other competent authority.

In foreign ports they are consular officers (i. e. British consuls and consular officials at British Embassies and High Commissions). In ports in non-foreign countries outside the UK (e. g. in UK Overseas Territories such as Bermuda and Gibraltar) they include government officials who exercise similar functions to those of an MCA superintendent. These officials may be known locally by a title such as Marine Officer.

The assured must contact his broker to initiate the claims process. Therefore, the shipowner's or manager's insurance department will immediately inform the company's broker, who will inform the lead underwriter at Lloyd's (assuming that the leading line on the slip was that of a Lloyd's underwriter).
