The person must (1) be 18 or over;
(2) have a Watch Rating Certificate; (3) have obtained an EDH Certificate or a VQ2 in Marine Vessel Operation; (4) have obtained a Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (CPSCRB) or a CPSC or a Lifeboatman Certificate; (5) produce proof of medical fitness; and (6) have completed 24 months' sea service in the deck department or 36 months as a GP rating, of which at least 12 months must have been on deck duties.
