Fortuitous accidents or casualties, peculiar to transportation on navigable water, such as stranding, sinking, collision, striking a submerged object, or encountering heavy weather or other unusual forces of nature. The ordinary corrosive action of seawater (which may cause a vessel to leak and founder) is not a peril of the sea, since it is not fortuitous, i. e. it does not happen by chance.
