Gross terms (Gross Charter). If in addition to the full operating costs of the ship, all other expenses, tally charters, etc. are for owners' account the charter is a "gross charter" or fixture on "gross terms".

Good ship or vessel. In some charterparties, the opening phrase may read as follows:

Gross tonnage. Under the pre-1982 British tonnage system, for purposes of measurement, gross tonnage is the sum of the following volumes:

General cargo contract. This is fundamentally a loyalty agreement or arrangement by which the shipper undertakes to ship all his cargo with an independent liner company or with a liner conference.

General Purpose container: 40 feet x 8 feet x 8 feet 6 inches (12.2m x 2.4m x 2.6m) with minimum interior dimensions of 12.0 15m x 2.337m x 2.362m. Door dimensions of 2.335m x 2.260m, a cubic capacity of 66.3 cubic metres and a maximum tare weight of 3.730 tonnes.

Heavy grains, Soya beans and Sorghums (HSS). This expression is used in chartering and in grain trading to mean any type of grain coming Within a variety of descriptions, and having an average Stowage Factor (S.F.).

Grain space.The grainspace is the complete capacity of the ship’s cargo spaces (including hatchways), measured in cubic feet or cubic metres.

Grain clauses. Grain cargoes can be dangerous for the stability of the ship because the grain has a tendency to shift when the ship moves in a seaway.

Harter Act 1893. The late 19th and early 20th century witnessed some governments; especially those where there were more shippers than shipowners, introduce legislation which prevented carriers of goods under bills of lading from excluding all their liability.

General Average clauses. There are generally two protective clauses in a charterparty dealing specifically with G/A. One states that if there is to be adjustment after a G/A act or sacrifice or expenditure, the adjustment is to be carried out according to the York-Antwerp Rules in some specified place, the law and practice of which will apply to the adjustment.

Guaranteed space per ton. In the grain trade from the River Plate charterers have a decided preference for vessels disposing of a good cubic capacity in relation to their deadweight capacity. Sometimes the cubic capacity is guaranteed by the owners, in which case the following clause would be included in the CENTROCON charter:

Hull clauses. Although cover is available to the shipowner for a specified voyage most ships are insured for a period of 12 months, the policy being renewed at the annual expiry date.

General average and marine insurance. Under section 66 (4) of the Marine Insurance Act 1906, where the assured has incurred a general average expenditure he may recover from the insurer a proportion of the loss to him.

GRI (General Rate Increase).This is the percentage increase of a liner conference tariff of freight rates when it becomes necessary to cover costs and make a sufficient profit for an acceptable return on the carrier’s investment. It is imposed after publication and a discussion period, usually of about three months.

Head charter. Most charters allow the charterer to sub-charter (or "sub-let" or "relet") the ship to other charterers.
