P. & I. bunkering clause. The ship is allowed to deviate without breaching the charter in order to lift bunker fuel at places where it may be cheap.
Normally, deviation may result in repudiation of the voyage charter or a claim by the charterer for damages, thus imposing a liability on the shipowner. Because the Protection and Indemnity Association ("P. & I. Club") generally covers the liability of its members, including the owners, a recommendation is made to shipowner members to insist on the insertion of such a clause.
