Gross tonnage. Under the pre-1982 British tonnage system, for purposes of measurement, gross tonnage is the sum of the following volumes:
“underdeck tonnage” + tweendeck space between upper and second deck + volume of permanently closed in spaces on/above upper deck + “excess of hatchways” + lighting and ventilation spaces for propelling machinery.
